Yorkshire Terrier

Description
The Yorkshire Terrier was developed in Yorkshire, and around Lancashire…fairly harsh regions in Northern England around the mid 19th century. Scotsmen looking for work in Yorkshire brought with them several small terrier type dogs. It’s not exactly sure what breeds were used in developing the Yorkshire Terrier but rumours have it at a combination between the Paisley Terrier, and maybe even a Maltese. The Yorkshire Terrier stands between 6 to 7 in. tall and weighs 7 lbs. The Yorkie has a luxuriously long flowing coat that naturally parts in the middle and draped over either side. The body color is a gray blue color and the tan everywhere else.
Temperament
The Yorkie doesn’t seem to understand he is a small dog. They are very courageous, and bold…always up for a new experience. The Yorkie may be little, but that doesn’t change the fact that you need to be his pack leader and socialize him properly. If this is not done your Yorkie may end up with some very unsavory behavior problems. With proper guidance and socialization your Yorkie will make a fine companion dog getting along with other members of the family including other dog or cats. They are not recommended to families with very small children.
Grooming/Exercise
You will need to stay on top of grooming the Yorkie and keeping the hair out of his eyes but putting the hair in a top knot. Daily combing is recommended. A few times a year the Yorkie should go to a groomers for the professional treatment. You will need to brush the Yorkie’s teeth they are susceptible to gum disease…this should be done daily. Yorkie’s enjoy going for daily walks and having time off leash in a secure area to run and play. They can live very well in apartments as long as you provide them with the exercise they need to stay happy and healthy.
