Wirehaired Pointing Griffon

Description

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon was developed by the Dutch breeder E.K. Korthals by combining French and German Pointers with German Griffons, Spaniels, Barbets and a type of Setter.  With a such a fine group of hunting dogs used for the foundation of this breed its no wonder he has fine hunting skills and a great nose. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon stands between 20 and 24 in. tall at the withers and weighs between 50 and 60 lbs at maturity. A course wire coated dog with a softer undercoat that comes in steel grey or silver with chestnut or roan markings, or solid chestnut.

Temperament

This dog is every hunters dream. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is an excellent hunting dog being a pointer and a retriever, and a wonderful family pet being gentle, and loving with the children in the home. He will need to have a job to do he can’t just be the family pet he is a hunting dog. Smart and eager to please his owners, he is easily trained. Proper socialization is needed to ensure you dog can get along well with people outside his family.

Grooming/Exercise

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon should be taken into a groomer at least twice a year to have his coat trimmed and stripped, but in between you will need to brush and comb his to keep his coat healthy. You will need to clean and pluck the hair from inside his ears to avoid ear infections. These dogs have energy to burn they will need long walks or better yet a jogging partner would do nicely. They will also need a secure place to run and play. A happy dog is a fit dog. The Wirehaired Griffon cannot live in a apartment or townhouse.

Life Expectancy is 10 to 12 years.
