Silky Terrier

Description

The Silky Terrier or Australian Silky Terrier was developed in Australia but its ancestors hail from Great Britain. According to the AKC they areĀ  believed to be a cross between a Australian Terrier and a Yorkshire Terrier that happend at the later part of the 1800′s. They were bred to be companion dogs, but on occasion some had been known to kill snakes in Australia. the AKC officially recognized the breed in 1959, the UKC followed later in 1965. Male Silky’s stand between 9 and 10 in. tall and weigh between 8 to 11 lbs. Females are a tad bit smaller in height and weigh a little bit less. They have a very silky coat (hence the name) that has no undercoat, and can tangle quite easily it comes in blue & red or blue & tan markings.

Temperament

This is a vivacious little terrier who is also a bit of a social butterfly is also very smart and courageous. Energetic and playful this is not your stereo typical “lap dog” He makes a fine little watchdog sounding the alert when something is not right. They make wonderful travel companions. Will not do well with children if not socialized properly, the same is to be said about small furry pets in the home. If not properly trained by his pack leader he will develop behavioral issues.

Grooming/Exercise

The Silky will need extensive daily combing and brushing of his long silky tresses, it also will need to be bathed on a regular basis to aid in keeping his coat and skin healthy. On average brushing and combing takes 20 min. per day. After bathing you must make sure your silky is completely dry and warm. The Silky has tons of energy and will enjoy daily walks as much as he will enjoy his off leash play sessions. They do great in townhouse homes as long as their exercise needs are met.
