Shetland Sheepdog

Description

Possibly descendant from Rough Coated Collies The Shetland Sheepdog was brought to the Scottish Island of Shetland and then bred with an Icelandic Yakkin who was brought over by fishermen to the Island as well. By the 1700′s The Shetland Sheepdog breed was complete; however, refining the breed took until the twentieth century, and after the dog was brought to mainland Scotland. The Shetland Sheepdog may be small in stature but he is a perfect herding dog for the smaller sized sheep that he herded on the Island. The Shetland Sheepdog stands between 13 and 16 in. tall and weighs between 14 and 27 lbs. He has a fabulously long double coat that comes in a variety of colors such as sable and black, blue merle, both with varied amounts of white and or tan.

Temperament

The Shetland Sheepdog has one very unhealthy habit…chasing cars. He is not a dog that should be allowed near a road unless on a leash with a capable person holding the other end. They make wonderful companion pets, and family dogs for the right family. Highly intelligent, and a true working dog, easily trained, and likes to keep busy. He will need a firm pack leader, and to know his place within the family. Not overly fond of strangers or children.

Grooming/Exercise

They are easier to groom that one usually imagines…Of course regular brushing is needed, but first mist the coat with a little water before you start combing out the matts. This should be done often to avoid matting of the coat. Bathe only when needed. The Shelti will need a lot of daily exercise, and would make a good jogging companion. They also need a very secure and safe place to run. As long as you meet your Shelties exercise needs he will do well living in a townhouse or apartment.
