Schipperke

Description

The Schipperke was developed by a Flemish canal boat captain by the name of Renssens, and it is believed they are descendants of the same stock as that of the Belgian Sheepdog. Over the course of time the Schipperke was bred smaller and smaller. The literal translation of Schipperke means “Little Captain”. They were used on canal boat for killing rats, and generally belonged to the Captain of the boat. A small, thick dog born naturally without a tail the Schipperke has a head shaped like that of a fox. He has a very thick double coat with a ruff or mane around his neck. He comes most commonly in all black, but it is not unusual to see them in shades of tan or fawn. The stand between 10 to 13 in. tall and weigh between 12 to 18 lbs.

Temperament

The Schipperke makes a great family dog. They have a high energy drive, and are extremely loyal to their owners, and adore kids and cats. Intelligent…they are easy to train and are eager to please…on occasion however they can be difficult to housebreak. Early socialization is key to success with this dog. Not afraid of anything they make awesome watchdogs and will protect their home from intruders. He will require a firm pack leader so not to develop unsavory habits like excessive barking, and guarding issues.

Grooming/Exercise

The Schipperke keeps himself fairly clean, but a good stiff brushing once or more per week is recommended to reduce the shedding. Bathe only when needed. Tireless the Schipperke need regular daily walks and lots of playtime. They are very active indoors. They will do well in apartments or townhouses as long as their exercise needs are met.
