Samoyed

Description
Modern DNA testing has uncovered that the Samoyed is one of the oldest breeds along with Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Huskies, and Chow Chows. The Samoyed gets his name from the Samoyedic people of Siberia. Another name for the breed is Bjelkier. He was bred to help with the herding to pull a sled and to sleep on top of his owner to help keep him warm at night. In 1906 a fur trader brought the first Samoyed into the U.S. Don’t be shocked to see a sweater or hat knit from Samoyed fur. It is considered the alternate to wool. Male Samoyed stand between 21 and 23.5 in. tall…females between 19 and 21in. tall. Males weigh between 45 and 65 lbs. females between 35 and 50 lbs. Pure white is the color preferred, but they do come in biscuit and yellow on occasion.
Temperament
Peace loving and dignified these are a gentle dog. They tend to be a one owner kind of dog, but on the other hand they will get along with everyone…which makes them a crummy watchdog…because they will get along with intruders as well. They fall into family lifer well and get along with children. The Sammy is a smart dog, and will thrive with something to do with you as his patient pack leader.
Grooming/Exercise
As you might have gathered he will need extensive grooming if you plan on keeping that snow white coat white, and free from dirt, and debris. They are heavy shedders and will need lots of brushing and combing. The Samoyed will need regular daily walks or jogs to stay happy and healthy. Keep in mind that during warmer weather all that fur will make him overheat if overworked. They will do fine in an apartment as long as their needs are met as far as exercise goes.
