Saint Bernard

Description

The Saint Bernard shares ancestry with the Sennehund, or Swiss Mountain Dog, and are also believed descendant of Molosser type dogs brought into the Swiss Alps by the Roman Armies. The Monks of St. Bernard Pass’s Hospice have written record of the dog dating back to 1707. The horrible avalanches of 1816 through 1818 wiped out most of the Saint Bernard breeding stock. In order to save what was left of the breed they were cross bred with the Newfoundland making the Saint Bernard we have today. The Saint Bernard stands between 25.5 and 27.5 in. tall and can weigh anywhere between 110 and 200 lbs. he has a either a smooth or rough coat the rough coat being dense and the smooth coat laying flat on the dog. The Saint Bernard comes in red and  white, and sometimes mahogany and brindle with darker shading around the face.

Temperament

The Saint Bernard is truly a gentle giant that simply loves kids. Needs to please and very loyal to his family. Intelligent and always willing to learn. Early socialization is important with a dog this size. He will need to be taught manners, and training should begin in puppy hood. With his potential size jumping up on anything including people is not a good thing. You have to be this dogs pack leader ill mannered dogs of this size can be a danger. Saint Bernard’s drool…a lot…especially after eating and drinking.

Grooming/Exercise
