Russell Terrier

Russell Terrier

Description

First and foremost this dog is an aggressive little hunter for any ground prey it can catch. Really any prey it can catch, and if it runs down a hole…even better. Part of a Fox Terrier strain developed by Reverend John Russell in the 1800′s. His small stature was developed so he could hunt underground. The Russell Terrier stands between 10 to 15 in. tall and weighs between 14 to 18 lbs. The Russell Terrier has a smooth, rough or broken coat that is not woolly. its predominately white with colored markings in either tan, brown or black. Tails are docked to around 4 in. …just enough to get a hand hold on for removing said dog from any tight fitting varmint hole.

Temperament

Courage abounds in this pint sized pooch. He is also very intelligent, playful, loving and easily spoiled you should never let him gain a higher ground than you. You must be his pack leader so he doesn’t develop some serious behavior problems (biting, barking, separation issues). He will get along well enough with children who are respectful of a small dog, and do not strike him. If you take the lead in training this little dog he can become quite the performer of tricks. He makes a wonderful companion dog, and thoughly enjoys being in the company of his people.

Grooming/Exercise

They should be brushed on a regular basis to help reduce shedding and bathed when needed. He will need daily walks at a fairly fast past. A well exercised Russell Terrier is s happy Terrier, a happy Terrier means a happy owner. They prefer to have someone home with them always, but if properly crate trained they will do fine alone, so it is possible to house one in a townhouse or apartment. The Russell Terrier is in his element when he can run, so a secure yard is optimal for this breed.
