Rottweiler

Description
Descendant of the Italian Mastiff, and quite possibly the oldest of the herding dog breed…The Rottweiler, or Butchers Dog. The Rotties ancient history dates as far back as the Roman legions marching through Europe. Rome’s army traveled through the German town of Rottweil, and well the local dogs met with the Molosser breeds that traveled with the army and the rest is history. These dog were worth their weight in gold proving to be wonderful herding dogs as well a protection for the herds. Modern methods of getting stock to market almost wiped out the Rottweiler by the end of the 19th century. In 1900 only one female Rottweiler remained in all the town of Rottweil. World War I helped to restore the breed with demands for a tough and brave police dog. In 1935 the AKC recognized the breed and in 1936 the Rottie was shown at Crufts. In the mid nineties it was the most registered breed by the AKC. The Rottie stands 22 to 27 in. at the withers (females are on the smaller end), and they average 110 lbs for males and 93 lbs for females. Rotties have a medium double coat the insulating waterproof coat, and the courser outer coat. The are predominately black with tan or mahogany marking around the face, above the eye, and on the legs, and near the tail.
Temperament
The Rottweiler is a amicable breed with a sweet disposition who loves kids. Make no mistake though this is a dog for a serious dog owner. This is not a dog for the novice. You will need to be his pack leader and provide him with constant, controlled training if you want to avoid behavioral issues down the road. Maligned by the entertainment industry the Rottweiler I assure you is not all teeth and ferocity. It has been rumuroed that once there was a large male Rottie who’s best friend was a male toy poodle.
Grooming/Exercise
An average shedder the Rottie will need regular brushing with a stiff bristled brush, and only bathe when necessary. You can’t give this hardy dog too much exercise. They would make a great jogging or running partner for some lucky owner. Not prone to wander but rather stay close to their beloved master.
