Rhodesian Ridgeback

Description
The Rhodesian Ridgeback origins are from South Africa, also known as the Lion Hound. European settlers in South Africa during the early part of the 18th century found a domesticated dog living with the Khosian tribes that’s fur grew the wrong way up the spine giving it the appearance of a ridge. The settlers in their efforts to breed a big game hunting type dog The Ridgeback was developed. The Ridgeback is resistant to disease. Its pads grow tightly together making them able to handle hard and harsh terrain. Intelligent enough to avoid dangerous situations. Their Short smooth red or wheaten coat actually repels ticks. The Ridgeback stands on average between 25 to 27 in. tall females 24 to 26 in tall., and weigh right around 70 lbs.
Temperament
Fair minded and very intelligent the Ridgeback will most likely ignore strangers…do not confuse this with aggression they simply will choose not to respond to people they are unfamiliar with. The need a gentle, but firm hand in training. Someone who is just, and can give them positive reinforcement training, and constant socialization. Loyal and protective of his owner and members of his family. The Ridgeback will make a wonderful guard dog with the proper training.
Grooming/Exercise
As with most short coated dogs…brush regularly with a good stiff brush and bath only when needed. This dog has tremendous stamina, and you will tire long before he does. This dog would make a runner or jogger very happy. They also require a large secure area in which to run and play. They can live in a townhouse as long as their exercise needs are met.
Health
Life Expectancy 10 to 12 years.
Possible Issues: For the most part the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a health dog.

- Dermoid Sinus (It can appear as single or multiple lumps on the dorsal midline)
