Rat Terrier

Description

This breeds origins are from Great Britan they were developed from a cross between Manchester Terriers, and Smooth Coated Fox Terriers somewhere around 1820, and introduced to America somewhere around the 1890′s where the breed changed even again mixing in Beagles, Whippets, and even Chihuahuas. This breed has the distinction to be named by the late great Teddy Roosevelt. Mr Roosevelt was said to have been quite fond of the breed and owned some black and tan ones. As the name claims *Rat Terriers or “Ratters” were used to kill rats in rat-baiting pits…it is rumored that a single Rat Terrier killed over 2000 rats in a little over 7 hours in a barn that was quite literally overrun with the vermin. The Rat Terrier comes in three sizes to suit your needs Standard standing at 14 to 23 in and weighing between 12 to 35 lbs. Medium standing between 8 and 14 in. tall and weighing between 6 to 8 lbs, and last but not least the Toy sized standing 8 in tall and weighing in between 4 to 6 lbs. His ears a naturally upright or tipped, and the tail is docked. He is a compact well muscled dog, lighting fast and with a quick mind. Smooth, short coat that comes in a large variety of colors…tri-colored, black and tan, blue/red and white, or red brindle…just to name a few.

Temperament

These guys are the purest definition of what is a terrier…Tenacious, lovable, pure energy, playful, curious, intelligent, and always alert. The Rat Terrier makes a fantastic companion pet, farm dog, and can make a wonderful family dog if socialized early on with the other members of the family. They have been known to get along very well with any cats in the household…however I wouldn’t introduce him to any pet rodents. Quick to learn and eager to please he will do well in training.

Grooming/Exercise

To keep this dogs coat health all that is required is a good brushing on a regular basis. Bathe only when needed. He will shed a fair amount. Ratter need a good deal of exercise and are always up for a walk. I don’t recommend off leash with this dog until he is well trained being a bit of a hunter he will chase squirrels, strange cats and rabbits. They can do well in a apartment setting as long as the exercise needs are fully met. Remember in order to avoid behaviour issues you must be his pack leader.
