Pyrenean Mastiff

Description

This massive dog comes from Spain, and was bred to protect his masters flocks from all predators including, but not limited to, bears, and wolves. Standing between 28.5 and 34 in and tipping the scales at 120 to 175 lbs the Pyrenean Mastiff is very intelligent, and fully capable of protecting his master flock and anything else he considers his job to protect. This dog is of a medium length coat with the fur being a bit longer around the legs, tail, and neck. The coat is snow but with always with a mask and large defined spots of color on the body in a variety of colors ranging from black to sand. The mask is usually a tad darker than the rest of the colored spots, and the ears are also always colored the same as the mask.

Temperament

Courageous, fearless, and protective when the Pyrenean Mastiff is “on duty” he is a dog to be reckoned with. A force of one. Unfriendly with strangers. The Pyrenean is also a fantastic family dog…loyal, gentle and loving to his human family and other pets in the home with proper socialization. He makes a fantastic protector and guard dog fully aware of his size and knowing how to use it best. He will need a pack leader who is not a first time dog owner, and one that has experience with large breed dogs.

Grooming/Exercise

The Pyrenean Mastiff will need weekly brushing to keep his coat healthy and free of debris that may get caught up in it. This is not a dog that will do well in anything less than a home with a large securely fenced area for him to play in. He will also require long daily walks to help keep him healthy. Regular check up for his teeth and getting his nails trimmed is also recommended to help maintain a healthy dog.
