Pug

Description

The origin of this little dog is shrouded in a bit of mystery, a lot of speculation, and a good deal of rumour. Starting somewhere in the 16th century he was a fashion accessory to many a fine lady of the royal houses all over Europe. And it is said that  Josephine de Beauharnais Bonaparte herself would smuggle messages in her Pugs collar to Napoleon while in prison. Officially recognized by the AKC finally in 1885. Male Pugs stand between 12 to 14 in. tall and females between 10 to 12 in. The male Pug weighs on the average between 13 to 20 lbs, and females between 13 to 18 lbs. The Pugs silky, soft, short coat comes in fawn, apricot, black and Silver with the distinctive little pushed up nose and short muzzle. Large dark protruding eyes, and a slight overbite in the teeth.

Temperament

The pug doesn’t quite understand that he is a small dog. Pugs are a gregarious little dog with tons of personality, charm, and affection for their owners. They make fantastic companion dogs, and good little watchdogs as well. They need a firm but soft spoken master who knows how to be pack leader, so that he doesn’t get the upper hand in the household, and subsequently develop bad behaviour issues.

Grooming/Exercise

Brushing with a stiff bristled brush and bathing only when needed (remembering do dry thoroughly after each bath), is all the Pug generally requires to keep his skin healthy and coat clean. Don’t forget that the deeply furrowed brow of the Pug will need to be kept clean as well. Pugs will do well in a townhouse as long as the exercise needs are met. Pugs will need daily walks with you in charge.
