Portuguese Podengo

Description
Descendant of ancient, primitive, and non specific dogs (kelb tal-fenek or thin dogs) that were used to hunt all kinds of game. The Podengos ended up on the Iberian Peninsula and Portugal somewhere in the 8th century B.C.. The Podengo come in two coat types and three different sizes. The coat types are smooth and wire coated, and the sizes are small, medium, and large. Both the smooth and wire coated in all sizes are a single coat, and both shed very little. The small variety stands between 8 and 12 in. tall and weighs between 9 to 13 lbs. The Medium dogs stands between 15 to 22 in. tall and weighs between 35 to 44 lbs. The large dog stands between 22 to 27 in. tall and weighs in at somewhere between 44 to 66 lbs. The wire coated dog is better in warmer climates, and the smooth coated dog will do better in colder climates. All sizes and coat types come in either tan, fawn or black with white markings.
Temperament
Both the small and medium sized Pedengo are smart, and will do well, if properly socialized, with children and other pets in the home. Both the small and medium sizes are free thinking, independent dogs that will not do well without a firm, but gentle trainer. They are very observent and make wonderful little watchdogs. The Large Podengo is a very intelligent and alert dog. Used for the most part to hunt boar in packs. They make good guardians. They will require a firm trainer, and they have to be respectful of the trainer.
Grooming/Exercise
This is a low maintenance dog requiring to only be brushed once in awhile to remove dead hair. None of the Podengo will do good living in a townhouse or apartment. They will need lots of daily exercise to match the energy level in this breed. A secure area for them is a must, as they like to dig dens.
Health
Life Expectancy is around 12 to 14 years.
A Healthy breed no matter the size the Podengo has no known health problems.
