Old English Sheepdog

Description

The origins of this breed are uncertain, but it is believed to been developed around the early 19th century in the Southwest Counties of England, and quite possibly a mix of The Scottish Bearded Collie or the Russian Owtchar. A drovers dog the English Sheepdog herded sheep, and cattle for its master. The tail on the English Sheepdog may have been docked so they would be deemed a working dog and the owner wouldn’t be taxed on them. Stocky and square they are quite well balanced and agile. Standing 20 to 22 inches, and weighing 60 lbs and up. The English Sheepdog has a fantastic long double coat…a down like undercoat which insulates the dog, and the courser outer coat (guard hair). They come in white with blue, grey, blue grey or merle colored patches, and have black noses with blue eyes, brown eyes or one of each. Simply adorable.

Temperament

A very adaptable breed The Old English Sheepdog is friendly, intelligent…an all around happy dog. They get along well with all members of the household including other pets and children, but due to a strong instinct to herd…may try to herd people. He may at times try to play to rough.

Grooming/Exercise

Brushing may take up to three hours once a week, and it has to be done in order to keep the fur from matting and tangling. Not easy but required to keep this dog happy and healthy. Bathe when needed. This is not an outside dog despite all the long hair, and he will require plenty of long walks and mental stimulation to keep him happy, and he enjoys having company around. They can do with townhouse living but will need a large secure yard for playing in.
