Norwich Terrier

Description

The Norwich and Norfolk terriers at one time were considered the same breed. The AKC in 1979 separated the breeds making each one distinct. Originally developed in England as a small ratting dog, or rat hunter  he was also used to go to ground and get foxes out of holes so the hunt could resume. The Norwich was also trained to hunt in packs. They stand at around 10 inches tall, and weigh between 10 to 12 lbs. Short in stature, but strong in body the Norwich have a wiry coat and comes in variety of colors red,  black and tan, tan, wheaten, and grizzle and sometimes with white markings. They are the smallest of the  working dog group, and one of the smallest of the terriers.

Temperament

A friendly, happy little dog, smart and active. He likes being a part of the family and is a true companion dog. The Norwich gets along well with children and other dogs, and family pets with the proper socialization. They are easy to train but can be difficult when it comes to housebreaking. They love a good game of fetch with a ball or stick. The Norwich doesn’t like to be left alone for long periods of time and will let you know by barking. If allowed to develop small dog syndrome you could see some behavioral problems like separation anxiety (which can lead to destructive behavior), and guarding behavior.

Grooming/Exercise

He is a light shedder, and his coat requires daily brushing to keep it healthy, and bathing only when necessary. This is a active little working dog and requires regular exercise with a daily walk. He may be small but still needs to know that you are pack leader. Fairly active indoors these guys will do fine in a townhouse or apartment as long as their exercise needs are taken care of.
