Norfolk Terrier

Description

The Norfolk and Norwich Terriers at one point in history were one in the same breed. The official separation came by the UKC in 1964 followed by the AKC in 1979. The difference between the two breed are the ears. Norfolk has little drop ears and the Norwich has stand up pointy ears. Like a great many other Terriers the breed was developed to hunt and kill rats. The Norfolk stands on average 10 in. tall and weighs between 10 and 12 lbs. Norfolks have wiry coats come in black and tan, red, wheaten, tan grizzle and on rare occasion they will have white markings.

Temperament

This is an all around good little dog, and with proper socialization and a gentle, and patient pack leader he will make the perfect family dog for the right family. They are smart and energetic needing both physical and mental exercise.  They love games and playing with a variety of toys. They can however be a bit difficult to housebreak, and if left alone outside for too long may dig up a flower bed or three. He is an active dog like all other Terriers and needs to have something to do so he doesn’t get bored. He likes to be part of family activities.

Grooming/Exercise

Daily brushing and combing is very important to keeping the Norfolk’s coat healthy. Bathe him only when needed…over bathing could ruin his coat. Make no mistake the Norfolk is a working dog, and enjoys a fair amount of exercise. They need a daily walks and a safe place that they can run and play in off leash. They will do fine living in a apartment or townhouse as long as you supply them with the exercise they need.

Health

Life Expectancy is 12 to 15 years on average.

There is not any major health issues with this breed, however, you should always take your dog in for regular check up with the vet, and have his teeth cleaned if needed.
