Newfoundland

Description
There are a good many rumors of how the Newfoundland came to be. One of those rumors is that in the early 1700′s Tibetan Mastiffs came to Canada via European Fishermen, and the dogs then mated with the local dogs, and that the breed that resulted in the Newfoundland or “Newfie”. The male Newfie stands between 27 and 29 in. tall and weighs between 130 and 150 lbs when fully mature. Female Newfie’s stand between 25 and 27 in. tall and weigh between 100 and 120 lbs when fully mature. This is a massive dog, and he comes complete with a water resistant coat that is flat, black, wavy and a bit on the oily side. Sometimes they will have a little white on the feet or chest.
Temperament
In a word…Perfect. Newfie’s are what you would want in a family dog. They are fantastic with children even tolerant. They get along well with other family pets (if raised with them) including the cat. They are social and will get along nicely with visitors, but knows when things aren’t right and will put himself in harms way to protect his family. Loyal, affectionate they do require your companionship, and want to be with the family that they are part of. The love being outdoors, but shouldn’t be made to live outdoors. Intelligent and easily trains. The Newfie is a peace loving dog, and would make a fine addition to the right family.
Grooming/Exercise
You will need to brush and comb the Newfie’s double coat with a stiff brush at least three times per week to keep up on the shedding. Bathe only when absolutely necessary…over washing will strip the natural oils from his coat. He will need to go on daily walks with you in charge, and have a safe and secure play to play and romp. They can live in a apartment or townhouse as long as you make sure they get the exercise then need.
