This magnificent breed was first developed by Heinrich Essing in the Wurttemberg region of Germany in the city of Leonberg. He three dogs…A St. Bernard, Newfoundland, and a Great Pyrenees. Heir Essing wished to develop a dog that looked like the town crests lion…He succeeded. The male Leonberger stands between 29 and 31 in. tall and weighs between 130 and 170 lbs. the Female Leonberger stands between 27 and 29 in. tall and weighs between 100 and 130 lbs. They have a harsh weather resistant coat that is tawny to reddish brown and maybe some black tipping with a small amount of white on the chest and tips of toes.
Temperament
The Leonberger is a large lovable dog who is happy, and has a sweet disposition. They adore everyone. Intelligent, well adjusted. The Leonberger makes an extraordinary family dog loyal and attentive. Has the patients of a Saint when it comes to even the unruliest of children. He needs a loving teacher who is firm, consistent and patient. They can be trained with some extensive training to be good watch dogs. They can be easily socialized to get along with other dogs, and family pets.
Grooming/Exercise
They will need to be thoroughly brushed at least once a week and you will need to check inside the ears as well, and getting them used to having their teeth brushed would be advantageous to you in the long run. You should only bathe the Leonberger when absolutely necessary. Don’t let him stay damp or out in the wet weather as this will cause hot spots on the Leonberger.

Life Expectancy is between 8 to 9 years.
