Irish White Setter

Description

The original Irish Setters were not all red, and in all actuality all red Irish Setter were a bit un common. The first Irish Setter were red and white or parti colored. Somewhere in the 1850 the red colored Irish Setter started becoming more popular, so red and white Setters started showing up less and less in new litters of pups. They were on the verge of extinction but a group of Irish White Setter lovers got together and rescued the breed in the 1940′s. Male Irish White Setters stand between 24 and 26 in. tall at the withers and females between 22 and 24 in. The breed weighs between 50 and 75 lbs. Beautiful medium long silky coat…in white with red patches.

Temperament

The Irish White Setter is high energy type breed. They can make fantastic family pets, and will get along nicely with all others in the home. Even the family cat can rest easy. They are housebroken easily. They will need proper training with a firm pack leader to show them right from wrong, so they perfect good manners in the home, and on the leash.

Grooming/Exercise

You will need to brush and comb the coat of the Irish White Setter on a daily basis to keep it free from matting, and debris it might pick up while at play. Bathe the dog only when needed. The Irish White Setter will need daily exercise or they could become a bit un manageable. A long walk or jog in the park will help. You must train him to walk beside you showing him that you are the dominant one.

Health

Life Expectancy is 11 to 15 years.

Possible Issues

  • PPC (Posterior Polar Cataract)

A healthy breed for the most part. Take them for regular check-ups and keep them up to date on vaccinations.
