Icelandic Sheepdog

Description
The First Vikings to settle in what is now Iceland (874-930 A.D.) brought with them this hardy dog to protect and guard the flocks. The Icelandic Sheepdog is Iceland’s only native dog. This dog is still very rare outside of his own country. The Icelandic Sheepdog stands between 12 and 16 in. tall at the withers and weighs in between 20 and 30 lbs. Females will be on the smaller end of both scales. There are two coat types for the Icelandic Sheepdog…long and short both of which are ultra thick to protect them form the cold weather. His coat is a reddish color on top with a cream color on the underside.
Temperament
You will need to be a confident pack leader with this dog. The Icelandic Sheepdog is a working dog, but can do very well with a family with proper socialization. He likes children and doesn’t have a strong prey drive so he can be taught to get along with other pets in the home. He is always alert and makes a wonderful watchdog announcing whenever somebody visits. He needs to be part of his family and involved with family activities.
Grooming/Exercise
You will need to brush the Icelandic Sheepdog on a fairly regular schedule twice to three times a week should be good to keep his coat healthy. They are fairly heavy shedders. Bathe your Sheepdog only when needed. Make sure to have his nails trimmed. He is a herding dog by nature and will need a great deal of exercise. More than the daily walk he will need a safe and secure place to run and play. He will also do well with some games. He can live in apartment as long as you can provide the essentials he needs to stay physically and mentally healthy.
Health
Life Expectancy is on average 12 years.
There are no major health concerns with this breed however to ensure good health take your dog in for regular check ups with the vet, and keep him up to date with all vaccinations.
