Ibizian Hound

Description

The Ibizian hound or Podenco lbicenco is a sleek and elegant hunting hound  from Spain, and is believed to date back as far as 800 B.C. when it was brought to the Island of Ibiza by Phoenician traders. The dogs became common place on the Island and were developed into rabbit hunters, and have been trained to hunt individually or in packs. The Ibizian hound hunts not only by scent but also by sight. Ibizian Hounds stand between 22 and 29 in. tall and weigh between 42 and 55 lbs. well mature. Females will be on the smaller and shorter end of the charts. The Ibizian comes in three types smooth coated, long coated and wire coated. The most common is the smooth coated Ibizian. They come in white and red, white and tan, or solid red or white.

Temperament

The Ibizian Hound can make a wonderful addition to your home, but you must be a strong pack leader to this dog. He is intelligent and trains easily, but he is also easily bored. Early socialization is key with this dog. The pet cat will be in danger unless the dog and cat are raised together, and be aware the Ibizian most likely will chase any neighbors cats. The can be protective of the family pack and wary of strangers.

Grooming/Exercise

All three coat types the long, short and wire haired need regular brushing and combing to keep it the coats healthy. To keep the smooth coated Ibizian’s coat shiny run over it from time to time with a rubber glove. Make sure to check the ears on occasion and keep the nails trimmed. The Ibizian Hound needs lots of exercise in the form of long daily walks or jogs he also will need a place where he can let loose and run. They can live in a apartment as long as their particular exercise needs are met.

Health

Life Expectancy is between 10 to 12 years.

  • Axonal Dystrophy (muscle and nerve disease)
