Description

Captain Edwards of Pembrokeshir in Wales developed the Sealyham Terrier in the 19th century by crossing Dandie Dinmont, Corgi, Westies, Wirehaired Fox Terriers, and the Basset of Flanders.. He bred the dogs to hunt a wide variety of small vermin including Fox, Otter, and Badgers. During the 20’s and 30’s the Sealyham was the “in dog” to have if you were anybody in Hollywood…Alfred Hitchcock owned two…Gary Cooper, Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart all owned Sealyhams. The AKC recognized the Sealyham Terrier in 1911. Sealyhams are not to exceed 12 in. tall, or weigh more than 20 lbs. Their coats are crisp, course, and long they come in white, or creamy white.

Temperament

Sealyhams are as close to perfect in a terrier you will ever see. They have a Zen-like balance between courageous and happy…affectionate, loyal, playful, free thinking. They adore all children, and make a great companion dog. They do need early socialization to keep them happy, and must be a part of the family unit. They can be a bit stubborn to train, but with proper pack leader instruction they will do fine. They also make fine little hunters of rats or mice.

Grooming/Exercise

The Sealyham will have to go to the doggie salon to have his coat trimmed and stripped, check with your groomer to find out how often this needs to be done. A healthy play session will take care of some of the Sealyhams exercise needs, but he will still need to go on daily walks to remain happy and healthy. He can live in a townhouse or condo as long as his exercise needs are met.

Health

Life Expectancy is on average about 15 years.

This breed has no immediate health issues. With all pets regular health check ups and keeping current on vaccinations will go a long way to keeping your dog healthy.
