Description

The Standard Schnauzer has been portrayed in paintings by such famous painters as Rembrandt, and Durer. They are the oldest of the Schnauzer breeds. Their name comes from the German word for muzzle or “Schnauze”. Vermin hunters, coach dogs, and even messenger dogs in World War I the Standard Schnauzer has been trained and used in many different capacities. The Standard Schnauzer is a square dog…meaning it is as long as it is tall. The male Schnauzer stands between 18 and 20 in. tall and weighs between 30 and 45 lbs. Females being a bit smaller are between 17 and 19 in. tall and weigh between 30 and 40 lbs. He has a course wiry top coat with a much softer undercoat and comes in either black or salt and pepper.

Temperament

The Schnauzer has a terrier type personality. He is a bit tightly wound with a loving personality. He is very smart, and makes a wonderful watchdog or guard dog. This dog needs to have a strong pack leader to teach him, and so he won’t develop some less than savory behavioral problems.

Grooming/Exercise

The Standard Schnauzer will need daily brushing and combing to keep the thick undercoat free from any matts. You should brush with the grain of the fur then against it to fluff the coat. You will also need to wash the beard after meals to remove any leftover food that may have gotten caught up in it. The Schnauzer should be professionally groomed at least twice a year where they will clip the coat all over to an even length. The Schnauzer will take as much exercise as you can give him. He loves to go for long walks or romps in the park where they can run off leash. The Standard Schnauzer will do very well in a townhouse environment as long as his exercise needs are met.

Health

Life Expectancy is 15+ years.

Possible Issues

There are no real health concerns with this breed; however, regular vet check ups and staying up to date on vaccinations is important for a healthy dog.
