Description

Not much is known about this interesting breed outside of its native country of France. It is believed that the Pyrenean Shepherd may be part of the foundation stock of the Australian Shepherd of today. They have garnered attention for their work after World War I as couriers, and search and rescue dogs. In 2003 at the World Agility Competition a Pyrenean Shepherd wowed the crowd by wining in the medium sized dog competition. There are two types of Pyrenean Shepherd…Rough faced and Smooth faced. The Rough faced type stands between 15 to 18.5 in tall at the withers…females being on the smaller end of the chart. Smoothed faced stand between 15.5 and 21 in. at the withers…again females being on the smaller end of the chart. Both types should weight between 15 and 35 lbs. This breed has a minimum weight requirement, and should never be overweight, but leaning toward the lean side. The Smooth faced type has shorter hair overall, and the Rough faced has longer. Coloring for the Pyrenean Shepherd varies. Most seen would be the fawn colored, but they come in other varieties including blue, and red merles, brindle, shades of grey and all black.

Temperament

Highly intelligent, and a natural herder the Pyrenean Shepherd is a dog that needs a job to do in order to be happy, but also does fantastically well with the proper encouragement and training in dog sports such as flyball, and agility coursing. This is a one man, or woman dog and will dutifully follow you where ever you go. Due to the close bonding with their masters the Pyrenean Shepherd is very in tune with the emotions of their masters. With socialization at a young age you can curb some of the inborn wariness of strangers and other animals.

Grooming/Exercise

Simple regular brushing on a weekly basis will keep the coat healthy and free from any foreign object. Bathe only when necessary. A active dog that will need daily walk to stay healthy and happy. Due to size you could house one in a townhouse as long as the exercise needs were met.

Health

Life Expectancy 12 to 15 years.

Possible Issues

Hip Dysplasia

Epilepsy
