<! [endif] >Description

The national dog of Malta, and known there as the Kelb tal-Fenek (meaning rabbit hound). As a matter of fact this sleek, regal dog is rarely seen outside of Malta. The head of the pharaoh hound should be wedge shaped with well defined features. Its keen, oval shaped, amber colored eyes (pups are born with blue eyes) miss nothing. It has a strong and long neck which is slightly curved. The body is slightly longer than it is tall at the withers, and with a deep chest, and long shoulders the Pharaoh Hounds average size is between 21-25 in. at the withers, and weighs in between 40-60 lbs. The coat is silky to hard, very short, and comes in many shades of red with white accent markings on the tip of the tail, toes, chest, and forehead. The red body color is what is accepted by the majority of the kennel clubs. When a Pharaoh hound is happy or excited it blushes…the nose and inside of ears will become pink.

Temperament

The Pharaoh Hound has a strong hunt drive, so if smaller pets are in the home use caution, but other than occasionally being reserved around strangers, and timid with their affection this dog has it all…active, social, intelligent, trainable, and playful. Pharaoh’s do bark but not without reason. They make wonderful watch dogs, but not a good guard dog as they are not usually aggressive towards people. This dog bonds closely with its humans, and likes to be a part of the family. Daily exercise is a must for this athletic hound.

Grooming

They have sensitive skin and its best to use either human baby shampoo on them or a gentle canine shampoo. They hardly shed and dry quickly after bathing.

Health

Possible Issues

Due to the fact that these dogs are not seen often out of Malta they have few if any known health issues.

A spectacular dog which reminds me of the statues inside the tombs at Giza… of the dogs protecting the Pharaohs<-->
