Description

The origin of this dog is Peru where Spanish explorers found this dog as pets in the homes of Inca Royalty back in the 1500’s. Fewer than a dozen dogs were imported in the U.S. and all Inca’s in the U.S. today come from those first dogs. Smaller gene pool hence the carbon copy looks of the dog…The dogs coming out of Peru looks much different today, and in Peru the dog is now called Calato (naked) or Al’co Calato (the naked dog). These dogs may be the origin of the Chinese Crested. The have very light sensitive eyes…large and dark. wrinkly lips, sometimes their leathery ears have tufts of hair growing from them. Supple soft skin that can be any color with a combination of pink, or they can be of a solid color. They range in size from 20 to 26 inches tall and 26 to 50 lbs.

Temperament

Not a dog for beginners. The Inca is wary of strangers, but loves his family and is protective of them, good with children. Intelligent, fast, and sure footed. They do not enjoy being alone, and don’t do well in cold temperatures. For the right owner this would make a wonderful pet.

Grooming/Exercise

Since the Inca has no hair, and has fair skin it will require sunscreen for outings on sunny days. You will need to exfoliate the dogs skin to remove dead skin cells much like you would your own to keep the skin soft and healthy. You will need to moisturize his skin much like your own with a lanolin free lotion. Bathe them on a regular basis with a gentle baby shampoo. or wash. They have little odor and no fleas. They need to go on daily walks where you are the leader. They are a sight hound so should remain on a leash to avoid them running after small animals.

Health

Life Span is 11 to 12 years

Possible Issues

The Inca is prone to skin and teeth problems. Regular dental cleaning from the vet and paying close attention to the skin is recommended.
