Description

Originating from the Canary Islands in the 1700′s its exact ancestry is a mystery, but its rumored that the Perro de Bardino Majorero was crossed with Masstifs and other English dogs brought to the Canary Islands by colonists. Thus creating the foundation for the Presa Canario. The Presa Canario was developed for guarding an owners flocks and property. Along with the Masstifs and other Bulldog breeds brought to the Canary Islands by English settlers, the English brought something else to the Canary Islands…dog fighting. The Presa Canario was used in dog fights which were considered “fights of honor” . The Presa Canario was also called “perro de la tierra” or “dog of the land”. This hefty dog stands 21 to 25 inches, and weighs between 80 and 130 lbs. He comes in fawn and bridle colors with an occasional a white marking.

Temperament

A very dominant breed they will require very early socialization if they are to be part of a family. They can be aggressive towards other dogs, and are not trusting of strangers. This is not a dog for first time dog owners or owners who are inexperienced with this type of breed. You as an owner must be pack leader at all times and have a firm hand in training this dog. All members of the family must be at ease with this dog. They are very affective guard dogs, and watch dogs.

Grooming/Exercise

A good brushing with a stiff bristle brush is all that is needed along with a good rub down with a chamois to make his coat gleam. Bath when needed. The Perro de Presa Canario will need long daily walks…with you in the lead. The Presa Canario should never lead on these walks he needs to understand that all humans are in charge. The Presa would benefit the most if he had work to do.
