Description

This rectangular Spitz type dog has a long history. Dating back to the 1600’s the Norwegian Lundehund was used for hunting Puffins along Norway’s coastline. The Lundehund has extra toes on each foot, and dewclaws as well, and is extremely flexible which made it ideal for hunting the Puffins in there rocky nests. A different method to hunt Puffins was developed almost causing this dog to become extinct, and twice Distemper has almost wiped out this breed. As a matter of fact they were down to six, and through extremely careful breeding the population has soared to an 2000 dogs. He stand 12 to 15 in. tall, and weighs between 13 to 20 lbs.. He has medium sized pointed ears that he can almost completely seal off by folding them forward or backward. He has a jointed neck and is very flexible in the area of his shoulders. He has a thick woolly undercoat and a courser outer coat.

Temperament

This dog loves his people, and does well with the children in his human pack, but will need a lot of training in order to be a good family dog. Lundie’s are a primative breed. As puppies go this one will do well with crate training…after meals, and after nap, and after playtime…they need to go out, or they are going to go…on your floor and rugs. They will get along with other dogs and pets in the family if properly socialized early on. The Lundie prefers his family to all others and may be a bit reserved with strangers. This dog needs consistant training from his human pack leader in order to be a good family pet.

Grooming/Exercise

The Lundie sheds a lot, and will need regular brushing with a stiff brush to keep its fur and skin healthy, and bathing when needed. This dog would do best in a home with a small secured yard for him to play in, in addtion to the long daily walks it will need to stay in shape.

Health

Life Expectancy 12 years.

Possible Issues

Lundehund Syndrome ( a series of digestive problems) very costly.
