Description

Back in the 1830 when pitting a dog against a bull was all the rage aficionados of the sport wanted to develop a dog that would be more agile and graceful when he attacked the bull…they crossed a Bulldog, Old English Bull Terrier, and a Spanish Pointer the end result was the Bull Terrier…Sadly the Bull Terrier proved not to be the best of fighters. The all white ones were a bit like a fashion accessory to the rich, and the Miniature Bull Terrier is the same breed only bred smaller to be easier to manage. The Standard Bull Terrier stands between 20 and 24 in. tall The Miniature Bull Terrier between 10 to 14 in. tall. The Standard Bull Terrier weighs between 45 and 80 lbs. the Miniature Bull Terrier between 24 and 33 lbs. Females overall are shorter and lighter. They have a short, thick coat that comes in black, brindle, white, tri-color, fawn and red.

Temperament

Today’s Bull Terrier is a happy, fun loving, affectionate canine…and not the fighter he was long ago. He can still be fearless, and courageous, and very protective of his owner, but he can also be a lover. They are very loyal towards their masters. With proper socialization, and a good deal a training from a firm pack leader they can make wonderful additions to the family. This is a dog that would fit in best with a busy family as Bull Terriers like to stay busy. They are not going to do well with other pets in the home or cats.

Grooming/Exercise

The Bull Terrier is easy to groom. Keep his coat brushed on a regular basis, and a rub down with a rubber glove should take care of the majority of the hair he sheds daily. He will need quick paced walks everyday to help him stay in shape, and a healthy amount of off leash playtime in a secure area. They can live in a townhouse just fine as long as they get the exercise they need.

Health

Life Expectancy is between 10 to 12 years.

Possible Issues

Zinc Deficiency

Born Deaf (white pups or more prone)

Obsessive Compulsive Behaviors

Slipped Patella (dislocation of the knee caps)

Too Much Testosterone (makes for an aggressive male)

Flea Sensitivity

Weight Gain
