Description

The Great Pyrenees or Pyrenean Mountain Dog is descended from the Hungarian Kuvasz and the Maremmano-Abruzzse. He is also related to the Akbash Dog and the Polski Owczarek Podhalanski. A very old breed he was a sheep-herding/protection dog for the Basque people who inhabited some of the areas around the Pyrenees Mountains of France and Spain. In the Middle Ages the Pyrenees was the official dog of the French Court. During World War II the Pyrenees was used as a draft animal hauling artillery over the Pyrenean Mountain Range back and forth between Spain and France. The Pyrenees male stands between 27 and 32 in. tall and their weight starts at 100 lbs when mature. Female Pyrenees stand between 25 and 29 in. tall and their weight starts at 85 lbs when mature. The Pyrenees has a course outer coat and a much softer insulating undercoat that is snow white.

Temperament

The Great Pyrenees is very loyal and protective of his family, very cautious of strangers weather human or dog. He will be a steadfast guardian of his family especially the children if raised with them from a youngster. If properly socialized he will get along with the other pets in the household…as a general rule they like cats. Makes a wonderful, and intimidating guard dog and watch dog

Grooming/Exercise

Brushing on a regular basis of the long double coat is suggested for this dog to keep his coat healthy. Only bathe this dog when needed. Once a year the Pyrenees sheds quite heavily. This dog needs a fast paced walk at least once a day, and a secure area to run and play. They will not do well in a townhouse or apartment needing more area for exercise.

Life Expectancy is around 10 years.
