Description

The Gordon Setter is part of the Setter family that includes the Irish Setter, and the English Setter, and is a terrific hunting dog. The First Gordon Setters in the United States were brought by Daniel Webster, and George Blunt in 1842. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1892. Bigger than both the Irish Setter and English Setter the Gordon Setter male stands 24 to 27 in. tall with females standing between 23 to 26 in. tall. Males weigh between 55 to 80 lbs and females 45 to 70 lbs. The Gordon Setter is a strikingly handsome dog covered with flowing black, medium leangth, silky soft fur that is beautifully accented with a rich golden color on the muzzle, chest, and legs. The hair feathers on the legs, tail and chest.

Temperament

A wonderful breed. They have a regal bearing that doesn’t go unnoticed. Loyal, gentle, and affectionate…these dogs are good with children, and make dedicated companions. Intelligent & courageous they are excellent hunters, and it’s only on rare occasions that they make a mistake about a scent. With proper socialization they will do well with other pets in the home. Wary of strangers. He is a perfect addition to a family who can give him love and strong leadership, and training.

Grooming/Exercise

Regular brushing and combing is required to maintain this dogs beautiful coat, and to keep it free from twigs and burrs. Bathe only when needed. Keep the nails trimmed. He will need to be taken on long daily walks to deal with the level of energy he has and to stay fit and health. This dog needs a home with a large fenced yard to play in.

Life Expectancy is 10 to 12 years.
