Description

This wonderful hunting dog was developed in Scotland somewhere in the early 1800’s by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks (Later Baron Tweedmouth), he developed the breed by crossing a yellow Flat Coated Retriever and Tweed Water Spaniels…it was rumoured that there were Russian Circus Sheepdogs in the mix, but that has been proven false. Male Goldens stand between 22 and 24 in. tall and females are between 20 and 22 in. tall. Goldens weigh between 60 and 80 lbs for males and 55 to 70 lbs for females. Well muscled and proportioned the Golden is a sturdy dog with a medium to long blond to cream colored coat. The outer coat repels the water and the inner coat helps to protect him from the elements. He has a kind face and warm eyes.

Temperament

This dog needs a calm pack leader to calmly train him. He needs to know that your in-charge. Goldens are at their element when they are with their families, sweet natured towards kids. They get along with most everyone, and other household pets as well. They are non protective, but make nice watchdogs…they will sound the alarm if something is wrong. They make fantastic guide dogs, drug dogs, they can hunt, track and compete in agility coursing. This is your all around great dog.

Grooming/Exercise

Your Golden will need regular brushing to keep his coat shiny and health. Bathe when needed. This guy would make the perfect companion for jogging and running. They need regular daily physical and mental exercise to stay happy. They love to play games.

Health

Life Expectancy is 10 to 12 years.

Possible Issues

• Hip Dysplasia
• Congenital Eye Defects OFA and CERF certification from both parents is needed
• Dam and Sire should be checked for Von Willebrand’s Disease and Hearth Conditions
• Skin Allergies (this is a common in Goldens, and will require vet care immediately
