Description

This dog is the best of quite a few breeds of hunting dogs. His origins are in Germany where the breed was first developed by German hunters, and the mix of breed are a combination of the old Spanish hounds of St. Hubert, Fox Hounds, and eventually the English Pointer. He can retrieve both game fowl, and small game such as rabbit. He works well as a Pointer and a Retriever. Males stand between 23 and 25 in. tall and females between 21 and 23 in. tall. Males weigh on average between 55-70 lbs and females between 45-60 lbs. This is a well defined dog, with a beautifully shaped head. stately in appearance. Intelligent looking with warm, brown, and friendly eyes. The German Shorthaired Pointer has short, thick fur…only two colors for this dog…liver and white you can have all liver or liver and white flecked or ticked or roan.

Temperament

This dogs loves people, and adores his family. Smart, affectionate, loyal and happy are just a few ways to describe this lovely dog. They are more than willing to please. The will need a firm but confident trainer. They don’t do well being left alone for long periods and could develop some destructive problems. With proper early socialization they will get along with other family pets.

Grooming/Exercise

Regular brushing with a good bristle brush and giving them a bath when they need it should be all that is required to keep his dogs coat in top shape. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a hunting dog and has energy to burn, unless you are a very active family this dog is not recommended. Daily walks are not going to be enough for this guy. This breed cannot do with apartment living he needs a large secure area to play and run in.
