Description

The German Shepherd or Alsatian is German in origin dating back to 1869, so as dogs breeds go he is fairly new. The German Shepherd a powerfully strong, intelligent, and loyal breed was bred to herd and protect their masters flocks, but today you can find them doing all sorts of work…police dogs, seeing eye dogs, and search and rescue dogs. In 1899 Max Von Stephanitz purchased a prime male specimen of the breed. He named the dog Horand von Grafrath…Grafrath was key to the Society of the German Shepherd Dog that Von Stephanitz started and went on to sire a good many pups. In 1919 the AKC for the first time registered the German Shepherd. A total of 54 dogs registered…7 years later over 8000 were registered. The German Shepherd stands between 22 and 25 in. at the withers and weighs in between 49 and 88 lbs. Female being on the smaller end of the scale. The German Shepherd comes with either a medium or long double coat…dense undercoat, and a top coat that they will shed year round. Most popular colors are the black and tan, and the red and black….more rare would be the sables, whites, and all blacks.

Temperament

Highly intelligent, active and self assured. Extremely loyal to their people they will do well in a house with children if properly trained by a strong hand and socialized from an early age. Eager to learn and very obedient they want to please. You must be this dogs pack leader. Keeping in mind this dog is a working dog he is happiest when he has a job to do.

Grooming/Exercise

The German Shepherd sheds constantly, and will need daily brushing in order to cut down on the hair. Bathing is only necessary maybe twice a year…more than that could damage the skins natural oils. The German Shepherd needs both mental and physical exercise. Long daily walks or runs and a secure area in which to play.

Health

Life Expectancy is close to 13 years.
