Description

The National Dog of Finland since 1979 the Finnish Spitz (Suomenpysykorva) is an old breed of dog that was bred for hunting. It will locate game for his master and bark to attract the attention of the hunter. Some 2000 years ago hunters from the Volga River area came to what is now Finland bringing with them the dog we now call the Finnish Spitz. The Finnish Spitz is a square dog being as long as he is tall. Males are between 16 and 19 in tall at the withers and females are between 14 1/2 and 17 in. tall. Males weigh between 27 and 33 lbs and females are between 20 and 27 lbs. The Finnish Spitz has a beautiful, red, double  coat that fades to a paler shade towards the legs, tail and muzzle. The thick, insulating undercoat and the courser outer coat do wonderfully to keep the dog warm.

Temperament

A great deal of patience is going to be needed to train your Sptiz. Not reaching maturity until they are almost 4 they will need a strong pack leader, so they don’t develop bad behavioral problems. Quite a barker you will have to be constant in your teaching your Spitz not to bark at you or others in the house. They do get along well with children and other family pets if properly socialized. They are a quick minded dog and love to have attention and can be affectionate. Leaving him alone outside may make for unhappy neighbors if you haven’t taught him not to bark at every little thing.

Grooming/Exercise

Twice a year you will have to brush his coat to aid him in shedding all the undercoat in preparation of the new growth. Not doing this could cause skin problems to crop up. Regular brushing is recommended to keep this dogs coat healthy. The Finnish Spitz will need regular daily walks with you in the lead, and a secure area to play in. The Spitz will adapt nicely to living in a townhouse as long as his exercise needs are met.
