Description

This graceful, and intelligent hunting dog hails from England and is descendant through well thought out selective breeding of the Cocker Spaniel in the 1800’s. The Field Spaniel is somewhat a rare breed in the U.S. the American Cocker and the English Cocker be more recognized, and more favored. An excellent bird dog the Field Spaniel is around 18 in tall and weighs between 35 to 50 lbs. he is a bit longer and a tad heavier than the Cocker Spaniel. The Field Spaniel has a very soft and silky coat. Most often always a solid color (black or liver), on rare occasions the dog will have tan markings, or roan, or sometimes with a bit of white on the chest, with wonderful wise brown or hazel colored eyes.

Temperament

This is a gentle, loving dog that would make a wonderful additon to any family. The Field Spaniel gets along with people, children and other pets, and animals if properly socialized. This dog has oodles of personality with a sweet, and gentle nature, but will still require a strong pack leader in the family. He will of course be happiest with a job to do since he is a hunting dog.

Grooming/Exercise

The Field Spaniel will need to be brushed a regular schedule once or twice a week should cover it. Uneven hair should be clipped to even it up every few months, and the ears will need to be cleaned as well. If your Field Spaniel is a show dog the groomers will need to tend to him about 4 times a year to thin the coat, and remove the hair from the inside of the ears. An active dog the Field Spaniel will need to be taken on lenghty daily walks. This is not a dog for townhouse living as they need a secure large area to romp and play in.

Health

Life Expectancy 10 to 12 years.

Possible Issues

Ear infections

Hip Dysplasia
