Description

The earliest setters were fist developed in the 1500’s and was a cross between the French Pointer and the Spanish Pointer. It wasn’t until three centuries later in the 1800’s that the breed started coming about with the help of Sir Edward Laverack. Laverack, along with another breeder Llewellin developed beautiful dogs that are the foundation stock for the setters we have today. The reason they are called setters is for the unique position they take on their haunches when they’ve found game. The Setter is 23 to 27 in. (females on the small end of the scale), and weigh between 45 and 80 lbs. The coat of the setter is long and flowing with feathering around the legs, chest and tail. The hunting variety has less feathering. They come in a speckled coat, called belton, and the colors are blue belton, orange belton, lemon belton, and tricolour (which is blue or liver belton with tan makings on the face, legs, and chest area. Originally bred as a hunting dog today’s setter has proven to be a wonderful family pet as well.

Temperament

The English Setter makes a great family dog for the right family who can use him as a hunting dog or find an outlet in family activities for his energy. They love people, and some are good with children, but older children not so much younger ones. Very intelligent with a soft temperament. They don’t do well with criticism, and should be gently trained.

Grooming/Exercise

The English Setter will need regular brushing and combing to keep his coat free from matts, tangles and any debris they may have picked up while outdoors. Bathe as needed. The English Setter is an average shedder. The Setter will need long walks on a daily basis with you as his pack leader, and will require room to run and play in a secure yard. Townhouse living in not recommended for this breed.

Health

Life Expectancy is 10 to 12 years

Possible Issues

Hip Dysplasia

Females have false pregnancies

Weight Gain due to overfeeding
