Decription

Closely resembling its cousin the Belgium Shepherd, the Dutch Shepherd most likely has a bit more German Shepherd running though its veins. The Dutch Shepherd was originally bred as a herding dog. He is an intelligent dog of medium size, well built. with good body structure. He comes in three types short haired, long haired, and wire haired. Short haired are the most common type for this breed. He stands 22 to 25 in. in height, and weighs anywhere from 65 to 67 lbs. Regardless of coat type they all come with a thick woolly undercoat. All three coat types come in a variety of brindled colors…silver brindle, gold brindle, blue grey, pepper and salt (blue grey and pepper and salt only in the wire-haired type).

Temperament

This breed need someone with strong leadership qualities who is able to firmly guide the dog. Do not underestimate this dog he is highly intelligent and alert. He is loving and affectionate, but also territorial. A fantastic working dog who is loyal to his owner. Fun loving and Playful the Dutch Shepherd will get along well with older children providing the children can take charge of playtime. The Dutch Shepherd will also make a fine watch dog, and guard dog, and is currently used today as Police Dogs by some law enforcement agencies.

Grooming/Exercise

The longer coated Dutch Shepherd will need to be brushed at least once a week…more would probably be better. All will need to be combed or brushed more often during the shedding season. Bathing only when necessary…over bathing this breed will cause skin dryness and irritation. This a very active dog with a strong work drive, easily trained in any sporting dog events. They can adapt to living in a townhouse if their exercise needs are met in other ways.

Health

Life Expectancy is 12 to 14 years.

Possible Issues

There are no major health issues with the Dutch Shepherd, but as with all dogs they should be taken in for regular check ups and vaccinations.
