Description

The Dachshund (pronounced dak sund) originated in Germany many, many years ago. They were developed to hunt Badgers in their burrows. There are three coat types for the Dachshund short haired, long haired, and wire haired, and they come in a assortment of solid colors black, red (all shades), brown, tan, fawn, blond (all shades), and blue. Bi-colors black and tan, black and cream, brown and tan, brown and cream, blue and tan, or blue and cream. Patterns and Tri-colors are Dapple, Brindle, Double Dapple, and Triple Dapple. There are also three sizes with Dachshund only Standard, and Miniature are recognized by the AKC. Standard stands between 14 and 18 in. and weighs over 11 lbs. by 12 mo. old. Miniature stands up to 14 in. tall and weighs 11 lbs or less at 12 mo. old. Toy stands up to 12 in. tall and weighs 8 lbs. at 12 mo. of age.

Temperament

The Dachshund is a bodacious dog who needs a full time pack leader who will give him the proper socialization and training he needs to become a involved family member, and not develop any unwanted behavior. They do best in a home with older children. They are loving and loyal to their families. They make wonderful travel companions. They can become little comedians, and get into mischief.

Grooming/Exercise

Of course the long haired and wire haired will require a bit more combing and brushing, and even some professional grooming once year for the wire haired, but the short coated Dachshund needs to only be rubbed down with a damp cloth. All dogs need to be bathed on occasion. They have a lot of energy for a low to the ground dog, and will need a daily walk and some time to run and play. They will do well enough living in a townhouse or apartment as long as they get the exercise they need to stay healthy and happy.

Health

Life Expectancy is right around 12 to 15 years.

Possible Issues

Spinal Disc Problems

Heart Disease

Urinary Tract Infections

Diabetes

Overweight due to lack of exercise and improper feeding.
