Description

The Coton De Tulear is the national dog of Madagascar. The lineage of this breed is thought to be of a Bichon type dog known as the Bichon Tenerife. The dog was brought to the Island of Madagascar around the 16th century by the Pirates that lived on the Island. This is not a hunting dog or a herding dog, but from the start was bred for companionship. The Coton stands between 10 and 12 in. tall at the withers and weighs between 12 and 15 lbs when mature. Like the name implies the Coton De Tulear has a fluffy or if you will cottony coat, but the come in colors not just white…you have black and white and a tri-colored, but white is the color of choice.

Temperament

This is a all around perfect companion dog. He has a animated personality, is loyal, loving and shows great affection for his owner. He enjoys being with you at all times, and is eager to please you with play and tricks. They still need to firm pack leader to discourage any bad behavior. They will need to know your in charge. With proper socialization they can get along rather well with other pets in the home, but like it best when they are the center of attention.

Grooming/Exercise

You will need to carefully groom your Coton on a daily basis in order to keep the coat healthy and free from snarls, tangles and mats. You must also trim the hair from between the pads on his feet and from inside the ears. They will need a good bath at least twice a year.

Health

Life Expectancy is between 14 and 16 years.

There is know major health concerns with the Coton, but it is advised that you take your dog in for regular check ups and dental exams. Also remember to keep your dog up to date on his vaccinations.
