Description

He is certainly not the tallest of the spaniels but he is most definately the heaviest. The Clumber was developed by The Duke of Noailles in 1768 France. During the Revolution he took his dogs to England and the Duke of Newcastle who then developed the breed further. Used to hunt alone or in packs and the quarry being either pheasant or partridge. The Clumber Spaniel stands between 16 and 20 in. tall and weighs between 55 and 85 lbs. They have a silky, straight coat that comes in white with either lemon or orange markings. They have warm amber colored eyes.

Temperament

The Clumber Spaniel is a mellow fellow, well mannered and sweet natured. Laid back and very intelligent an all around pleasing dog. With proper socialization he will make a wonderful addition to the family getting along with other dogs and even the family feline. You will still need to be this dogs pack leader with a gentle hand in training as they respond negatively to harsh treatment. You will need to pay close attention to the Clumbers diet as they have a tendency to become overweight.

Grooming/Exercise

The Clumber will need to be brushed and combed fairly often to prevent mats and tangles in their silks coats. On occasion you will need to trim the coat. Pay close attention to the eyes and ears making sure they are clean as well. The Clubmer Spaniel is a breed that matures quickly, and enjoy being very active, and going on long walks, along with some play time to keep them healthy. As long as you maintain a healthy exercise regime for your Clubmer he can live nicely in a townhouse or apartment.

Health

Life Expectancy is between 10 and 12 years.
