Description

From Sicily comes the Cirneco dell’etna or Sicilian Greyhound. He is thought to have come to Sicily over 3000 years ago with Phoenician traders. Bred to hunt rabbit in harsh terrain the Cirneco dell’etna can hunt for hours without food or water. The Cirneco dell’etna stands between 16. 5 and 19.5 in. tall at the withers and weighs between 18 and 26 lbs. Females tend to be on the short and light side of both scales. They have a smooth and short coat that comes in all shade of Fawn with white markings. The Cirneco dell’etna is a swift hound.

Temperament

This dog thrives on being the center of attention especially when you his owner are giving him the attention. A friendly dog who is loyal and loving to his people. With proper socialization, at an early age, he will get along with other members of the family. You must be his pack leader in order to avoid behavior issues later on. He will be standoffish with other dogs, but will do well with dogs of his own breed. Can get along with older children as long as they respect each other. This dog needs to be with his family, and is not intended as a outside dog. This is also not a dog for every family.

Grooming/Exercise

The Cirneco dell’etna is a low maintenance type of breed as far as brushing goes, but you should brush his with a soft brush once a week, and for added shine rub him down with a chamois cloth. The Cirneco dell’etna needs a large amount of exercise starting with a long walk with you in the lead. He will also need a secure area to stretch his legs and run. This dog will do fine in an apartment or townhouse as long as you can provide him with the exercise he needs to stay healthy.

Health

Life Expectancy is 12 to 14 years.

There are no major health issues with this breed, but you should take your dog in for regular checkups and keep them up to date on all vaccinations.
