Description

The Chow is truly one of the oldest breed in existence today. The Chow is also one of the first breeds to separate and emerge from wolves, and rumored to originate from the dry savannas of Mongolia. The Chow was bred for many uses and has been used for…hunting, guarding, herding and even cart pulling. America’s President Calvin Coolidge owned a black Chow Chow named Timmy. The Chow Chow stands between 18 and 22 in., and weigh 45 to 70 lbs. He has a black tongue, and a ultra thick coat which comes in either smooth or rough. They colors for this breed are red, blue, cinnamon, cream, tan, gray, white or black.

Temperament

The Chow Chow will require intense socialization at a young age in order to be a successful member of the family. Properly socialized he will get along with children and cats in the home. You must always remain this dogs pack leader and stay in charge, or your Chow could develop some serious behavior issues. The Chow must know that your in charge and he is not the pack leader. This is not the breed for the inexperienced, but rather for someone who knows how to handle himself with a strong dominant dog breed.

Grooming/Exercise

The Chow Chow will need to be brushed on a regular schedule it is important to retain a health coat on the dog. He sheds quiet heavily. Bathe him only when needed. They need to be taken on daily walks with you in the lead…never him. He will also need a secure area to play in. The Chow Chow can live well in a apartment as long as you see to his daily need for exercise.

Life Expectancy is about 15 years.

• Entropion (due to eyelid abnormality)
• Mange ( some dogs suffer with Mange)
