Description

The Chinook is a breed of dog that was named after a dog that was named Chinook and owned by the breeds founder Arthur Treadwell Walden who lived in Wonalancet New Hampshire. Chinook himself was a cross between a Husky and Mastiff, and he was bred with Belgian Sheepdogs, German Shepherds and possibly Canadian Eskimo Dogs. Walden was a man with many years experience breeding sled dogs. The breed had some tough times almost dying out in the early 1980′s but it has been rebuilt and today their numbers are growing. Male Chinooks stand between 23 and 27 in. tall and weigh on average of 70 lbs. Female Chinooks stand between 21 and 25 in. tall and weigh on average 55 lbs. They have a double coat with the outer coat course and the undercoat thick and soft. They come in a tawny fawn color.

Temperament

This is a dedicated working dog, and thrives on having a job to do, and is happiest when he is doing it. Sledding, Cart Pulling, Search and Rescue he can be trained to do it all. This dog has an even temper and a calm nature about him. He is friendly, and non aggressive. They make for wonderful children companions especially when he has been with them his whole life. Loyal and close to their owners. They will look to you to be a confident pack leader.

Grooming/Exercise

The Chinook needs little grooming to keep his coat in good health, but a good brushing once a week couldn’t hurt. Bathe only when needed. The Chinook will need daily walks to keep them fit, and a safe secure place to run and play. They can live nicely in a apartment or townhouse as long as you are responsible in seeing that they get the amount of exercise they need. This is not an outside dog.

Health

Life Expectancy is between 10 to 15 years.
