Description

English Gamekeepers bred the Bullmastiff  in the early 1800′s bred this dog to assist the wardens, catch poachers, and to guard the estates of the British nobility…He was also known as the Gamekeeper’s Night Dog. Bullmastiffs are just the perfect amount Old English Bulldog and English Mastiff…something like 60%, 40%. The English Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1924, and the AKC followed in 1933. Male Bullmastiff stand between 23 and 25 in. tall, and females between 22 to 24 in. tall. Males should tip the scales between 110 to 130 lbs, and females between 100 to 120 lbs. They have a short but slightly rough coat that comes in brindle, red or fawn…a little white is permissible on the chest, and black markings or mask on the face.

Temperament

Due to their strength and size the Bullmastiff is going to need a strong, firm and confident pack leader to see him through his training. This is a good natured dog unless provoked. Courageous, Intelligent, Loving, and dutiful the Bullmastiff make a wonderful family being. He is good with children, and is in his element when he is part of his family unit. Socialize as early as possible and he will get along with other dogs, and pets in the home.

Grooming/Exercise

The Bullmastiff is easy to care for. Brush his coat on a regular basis and bathe only when needed to keep his coat and skin healthy. Because they are so large they carry a good amount of weight keep the nails trimmed. The Bullmastiff is kind of a slacker when it comes to exercise, make sure to provide him moderate exercise and keep him trim by not overfeeding him. He will do fine living in an apartment as long as you take care of his exercise needs.
