Description

This sturdy little hunting dog is traced back to the French Province of Brittany. It is rumoured to be a mix of the Orange and White Setter and a unidentified French Dog. The Brittany is wonderful bird dog, and quite popular. In some countries he is known as the Brittany Spaniel, but in America he is called only Brittany. The male Brittany stands between 17 and 21 in. tall at the withers and weighs between 35 and 40 lbs. The Female Brittany is a bit smaller standing only 18 to 20 in tall at the withers and weighing between 30 and 40 lbs. The Brittany’s eyes come in warm shade of amber or hazel his feathered coat comes in a variety of colors orange, liver, black all with white or liver tri-colored, and black tri-colored.

Temperament

The Brittany is born a hunting dog and is easily trained to do exactly that. This dog is not one to sit around the house, but rather needs a job to do in order not to become hyper. If they are raised with children they will do well around them, but they aren’t really a family type dog…they are a hunting dog and would do best owned by a hunter. He is affectionate toward his master, and is respectful of a strong pack leader.

Grooming/Exercise

The Brittany will need his coat brushed on a regular basis with a good brush this will keep his coat in a healthy conditions and free from tangles and debris. Pay attention to his ears especially if he has been out in the woods. Make sure to check for ticks and chiggers. Bathe only when needed. He cannot live in a townhouse or apartment setting, but rather should live somewhere that he will have acreage to roam on.

Health

Life Expectancy is between 10 and 12 years.

Possible Issues

Seizures

Hip Dysplasia
