Description

In French the name Bichon Frise literally means curly lap dog, and thats exactly what the Bichon is. A cross between a poodle and a Barbet Water Spaniel the Bichon has been a circus performer, and traded by seafaring Spaniards. They ended up being a favorite of the French Nobility in the 16th century. Todays Bichon however is content do just be a lap dog. Male Bichons stand between 9 and 12 in. tall with females standing between 9 and 11 in. tall. Bichons weigh between 7 and 12 lbs. The Bichon has a curly outer coat with a much softer undercoat. They most commonly come in white, but don’t be surprised to see grey, apricot, or cream colored Bichon. These are all acceptable colors for this breed.

Temperament

This lap dog has a quick wit and a certain charm about him. Real people pleasers the Bichon, he needs to be with his owner, and part of a family unit. without a doubt one of the friendliest of the toy breeds he will get along with all in the home including other pets. They do wonderful in Agility coursing being easy to train and fairly fast. Happy dogs with all around fantastic personalities.

Grooming/Exercise

This little guy will need to be bathed at least once a month and brushed on a regular basis in order to keep their coat health and free from dirt and debris. They will need to see a groomer once a moth for trimming, nail clipping and removal of the hair from the ears. For the most part a healthy dose of daily play will take care of most of their exercise needs, but they still will need to go for daily walks. The Bichon will do o.k. in an apartment and are pretty active inside.
