Description

Believed to be the oldest of the French shepherds The Berger Picard is rumoured to have been around since 800 A.D.  Some people believe the dog to be related to the Briard and the Beauceron, while others say its is related to the Dutch and Belgium shepherds like the Malanois, and the Tervuren. The Berger Picard in 1863 made an appearance in the French dog show. His rough and ready looks, needless to say, did not wow the judges. After World War II the breed was found to be on the brink of extinction, and today is still considered quite rare. The Berger Picard stands between 21.5 and 26 in. in height and weighs between 50 and 70 lbs. He is covered with a 2.5 in long course coat that comes in varying shades of grey, red-grey, grey-black, blue-grey or light or dark fawn. The smallest amount of white is allowed on the feet for show dogs.

Temperament

As with most of the Shepherds they want to be an active part of the family unit, and no exception to this rule is the Berger Picard. Early socialization will better prepare them for this, and they will do well with children, and other pets in the home, and even other farm animals. You will need to be the strong, but patient pack leader to this dog…never letting him be above any member of the family. If given a choice this is the dog that will stick with you instead of wandering off.

Grooming/Exercise

The Berger Picard is truly a low maintenance dog as technically you won’t need to brush him but a couple of times during the Spring and Fall when he is shedding. They have 0 doggie odor, and bathing is not really necessary just maybe a rinsing of the dirty parts. The Berger Picard makes up for his lack of hygiene needs in the exercise department…they love long runs or jogs not just walks. They also enjoy swimming, and obedience courses. He can dwell in a apartment as long as his exercise needs are met.

Life Expectancy is right around 14 years.
