Description

The Beauceron is almost unheard of outside its native country of France. The earliest Beauceron possibly dates back to a manuscript written in 1578. In 1863 Pierre Megnin discerned that there were two types one long haired varitey the Berger de Brie or Briard, and the short coated variety know as the Berger de Beuce or Beauceron. The Beauceron has also been called the Bass Rouge or Red Stocking because of the four red stocking it appears to be wearing. The Beauceron stands between 24 and 27.5 in tall and can weigh up to 110 lbs. There are two color patterns for the Beauceron…black and tan with tan marking on the bottom of both legs, around the lips, above the eyes, and under the tail. The other color scheme for this French herding dog is Harlequin the tan areas remain the same as in the black and tan, and black will be the primary color with patches of grey.

Temperament

The Beauceron will need a strong pack leader from day one, someone who is capable of taking charge and thoroughly training him, and a good deal of socialization if your going to make it part of a family  with young children. The Beauceron enjoys being activily engaged in work, and makes a fine natural guard dog. The can get along with other dogs if reared with them or properly introduced to them…this goes for cats as well, but may not do so well off leash at the local dog park.

Grooming/Exercise

The Beauceron should be groomed on a regular basis this will help to reduce the amount of hair that they will shed out. The Beauceron needs a great deal of exercise, and a job to do. He would be happiest enrolled in agility course or learning to play flyball. He needs room to run, but will do o.k. in a townhouse as long as his needs are met elsewhere, and he has a large secure area to run.
